10 Wedding Cake Trends For 2018


The trend for delicious treat tables and gorgeous sweet favours is set to continue well into the 2018/19 bridal season with couples treating their guests to an array of fun, pretty treats including cupcakes, cakepops, macarons, gourmet marshmallows, doughnuts & meringues - all beautifully decorated and packaged to tie in with the wedding colours.

2. metallics

2017 was the year of rose-gold and the trend continues into this year with copper and gold taking centre stage. Metallics will bring a very striking, modern element to your cake and can be incorporated in many ways, from a small accents of lustre dust here and there to an entire tier covered in silver or gold leaf. Combine metallics with geometrics for a totally fashion-forward cake worthy of Eddie and Patsy !

3. drip cakes

This delicious trend shows no sign of slowing down with ever more sophisticated versions appearing all over the internet. You can choose from all sorts of flavours and a cornucopia of toppings from whimsical to elegant.

4. statement flowers

Big blooms are everywhere this season, from bridal bouquets, floral crowns to table arrangements. Peonies, David Austin roses and dahlias are perfect for an English Garden look while brightly coloured orchids, protea and tulips make a bold centrepiece for your reception.

I can't get enough of the trend for greenery and foliage. Greenery can translate into so many different cake themes. Maybe a decoration that is all greenery such as huge tropical leaves or cacti and succulents. Or combine large quantites of leaves with flowers to give a really realistic finish. For a really funky look add Bells of Ireland, a bright green flower that looks stunning combined with other cottage garden favourites.

7. texture

Using elements like bas relief, textured buttercream, wafer paper and other 3D effects, this is chance to give an otherwise simple cake a tactile quality. It looks fantastic on a single-colour cake.

8. naked cakes

Still stylish, the latest generation of nearly naked cakes are pared down to the basics with just a light outer coating of buttercream to show off the interior of the cake. More and more couples are adding beautiful seasonal fruits and herbs to give a really rustic, natural finish to their cake.

9. marble

Sugarpaste with swirls of complementary colours makes a great finish, adding a modern edge to your cake.

10. royal icing

From brush embroidery, stencils & runouts to floating extension work and intricate lacework, royal icing is the cke designer's way of showcasing their skills. Beautiful lace patterns inspired by the bridal dress are particularly on trend, with spanish mantilla lace being a huge favourite of mine. I'm sorry to say that the heyday of overpiped "Lambeth work" is over but IMHO no cake is complete without a crisp finish of piping around the base.
